(Locator); (Russia Tourist Map)...One of the least visited cities in the Russian Far East, Komsomolsk-na-Amur was only founded in 1932 mainly to serve as a manufacturing city for defense industries. Because of the sectret nature of the work there, and the fact that it was a "closed" city for almost its entire exsistence, foreign tourists may not feel the same welcomeness that they would feel in other cities. Having said this, there is still many interesting and unique reasons to visit Komsomolsk na Amur. Because of its remoteness, this was a natural area to house prisioners of all stripes, but during the Stalin era as many as 40 prison camps were established in the region. Today, most visitors arrive to this regon along the BAM railway line.
