The Kizhi Island of the Onega Lake is a perfect destination for outdoor and cultural activities. During summers, it can be visited by daily ferries from Petrozavodsk city and river cruises...The popularity of the Island is owed to the Kizhi architectural ensemble (museum) established in 1966, which quickly earned a reputation of a cornerstone of the Russian architectural wooden heritage represented by the 1714 Cathedral of the Transfiguration, the 1764 Church of the Intercession and the Belfry restored in 1874.
All together, there are about 82 items for display. Monuments of folk wooden architecture, peasant life, applied wooden and ancient Russian pictorial art are still finding their way to Kizhi island. The museum pursues the aim of exhibiting the culture of various nationalities and ethnic groups of Karelia. New displays have already appeared, such as "Russian embroidery," "The Russian of Pudozhye," and "Karelian from Pryazha." Preparation are underway for creating new displays: "Karelia from Kondopoga," "Northern Karelians," and "The Vepses."
