(Locator); (Russia Tourist Map)...Novosibirsk is Russia's third-largest city, after Moscow and Saint Petersburg with population of 1.4 million (2010). The city stands on the banks of the Ob River in the Western Siberian Plain. To the south of the city lies the Ukok Plateau, which forms part of the Altai Mountains. The city was founded in 1893 at the future site of a Trans-Siberian Railway bridge crossing the great Siberian and was named Novonikolayevsk. The bridge was completed in the spring of 1897, making the new settlement the regional transportation hub. The importance of the city further increased with the completion of the Turkestan-Siberia Railway in the early 20th century. The new railway connected Novosibirsk to Central Asia and the Caspian Sea. With the beginning of the Soviet history, in 1925 the city was renamed to Novosibirsk meaning "New Siberia". Very quickly the city becomes the chief industrial, cultural and academic center of Siberia. Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theater, one of the most impressive in Russia, was built during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. The Novosibirsk Philharmonic is among the best orchestras of Russia. In 1950 the Soviet government built a first scientific town near Novosibirsk. It was called Akademgorodok. In the recent years, the archeologists of Akademgorok have made censational discoveries in Altai Mountains. One of them is Ice (Scythian) Princess
