(Locator); (Russia Tourist Map)...it would be another typical BAM Railway town built in the middle of nowhere with questionable purpose and future. But Severobaikalsk town and its 28,000 residents got lucky. Built right at the northern mountainous tip of Lake Baikal, the town’s multi story buildings actually add to the skyline if you look at it from the right angle. Perhaps this is because of the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and Lake Baikal, which make everything fade in the backround. Major attractions of Severobaikalsk are the magnificent scenic views, whether you are hiking, fishing, cruising or swimming in the sulfur springs. The surrounding wilderness is overwhelming. Just a short walk from the train station towards the lake will bring you right to the immense lake, flanked by snow capped high mountains covered with pine and fir trees. Severobaikalsk is connected with the Trans-Siberian Railway by an overnight train from Irkutsk city, which gives travelers numerous options for getting around. The closest airport is in Nizhneangarsk town (25 km from Severobaikalsk town). From here you can take flights to the larger cities of Ulan-Ude or Irkutsk.
