Mirages of Ancient Capital
Interested in treasures of lost civilizations?...Mongolia has a great present for you. Consider visiting Kharkhorin town located in central Mongolia. In 1220, it was a flourishing capital of Genghis Khan's Mongol Empire called Karakorum. Best way to explore the area is to book a driving tour from Ulaanbaatar (or Ulan Bator) (present capital). Despite the distance (380km/240mi) and bad roads, tourists will benefit greatly from driving thru pristine country with endless grasslands and Steppe. Driving will also gives tourists a great chance to learn and experience true Nomadic life. Technically it is possible to driver to Kharkhorin town and back in 3 days/2 nights, but 4-5 days would be more suitable for folks who want to avoid too much driving, and more sightseeing on foot. It is also possible to fly to Kharkhorin town and return by car, or fly both ways to save time or avoid driving at all.
