Historically known as Urga, first Nomadic settlers appeared in the area of modern UlaanBaator in 1639. Because of the perpetual migration lifestyle, by western definition, the city technically did not exist until 1778, when a merchant point was established with nickname "The City of Felt". In 1911, after Mongolia’s independence from China, Urga was announced as the new capital of Mongolia and in 1924 it was renamed to UlaanBaatar (Red Hero) in honor of Mongolia's national hero Sukhabaatar.
