Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821-1881) was born in Moscow. In 1837, his farther sent him to St. Petersburg to study. Captured and inspired by the city's life, in 1846, he published his first novel [Poor Folk] signaling the arrival of a new star in Russian literature. During this tour you will walk in the footsteps of many of the characters from Dostoevsky stories such as Crime and Punishment, Netochka Nezvanova, White Nights, and Poor Folk.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Shil's house...Dostoevsky lived here from 1847 to 1849, wrote the "White Nights" story, and was arrested for attending revolutionary meetings.
  • Tikhvinsky cemetery...is the place of Dostoevsky's grave.
  • Cafe “Idiot”...enjoy the atmosphere of Dostoevsky's time.
  • Sennaya Square...known as “the belly of St. Petersburg”, it became a prototype and a real scene of action in many novels.
  • Stolyarny Lane, 5...a house of Radion Raskolnikov..
  • Ekaterininsky Canal...houses of Sonechka and pawnbroker Alyona Ivanovna from "Crime and Punishment".
  • Vladimirsky prospect, 11...a house where Dostoevsky lived from 1842 to 1846 and wrote the novel Poor folk.
  • Army Engineering College...Dostoevsky's first school.
  • Peter and Paul Fortress...Dostoevsky was imprisoned here.
  • Izmailovsky Cathedral...is where Dostoevsky married.
  • Nikolsky Cathedral, Kryukov Canal...a scene from the writer’s early works Poor folk, and Netochka Nezvanova.
  • Dostoevsky museum...in this apartment, Dostoevsky spent the two last years of his life and wrote The Brothers Karamazov. Many of the belongings of the writer are on display here.

    TRAVEL OPTIONS:

    [Option #1] - 3 hours: private, driving, guided tour
    Meet at the hotel. After brief introduction, begin the driving portion of the tour with short stops by Shil's house, Tikhvinsky cemetery, Cafe "Idiot", Sennaya Square, Stolyarny Lane, 5 (a house of Radion Raskolnikov), Ekaterininsky Canal, Vladimirsky prospect, 11 (a house where Dostoevsky lived from 1842 to 1846), Army Engineering College, Peter and Paul Fortress, Izmailovsky Cathedral, Nikolsky Cathedral, Kryukov Canal, and finally, our last stop, the Dostoevsky museum (apartment). At this point, the driver leaves. The tour guide assist with obtaining admission tickets to the museum, and then also leaves. Tourists explore the museum on their own or assistance of the local museum guide (Russian language only). After the museum, travelers arrange own transportation to the hotel.

    [Option #2] - 5 hours: private, driving, guided tour
    Meet at the hotel. After brief introduction, begin the driving portion of the tour with stops by Shil's house, Tikhvinsky cemetery, Cafe "Idiot", Sennaya Square, Stolyarny Lane, 5 (a house of Radion Raskolnikov), Ekaterininsky Canal, Vladimirsky prospect, 11 (a house where Dostoevsky lived from 1842 to 1846), Army Engineering College, Peter and Paul Fortress, Izmailovsky Cathedral, Nikolsky Cathedral, Kryukov Canal, and finally arrive to Dostoevsky museum (apartment). The tour guide stays with tourists to provide general guidance and translation of facts and stories provided by the local museum guide, answers questions.
