Pasternak's house in Peredelkino

  Doctor Zhivago and Pasternak

 Boris Pasternak

"Leaving the motherland will equal death for me. I am tied to Russia by birth, by life and work."

In 1958, Russian poet and novelist, Boris Pasternak (1890-1960) was awarded the Nobel Prize for his famous novel Doktor Zhivago, but declined the honor because of the protests of the Soviet goverment. The novel was banned in the Soviet Union and Pasternak was expelled from the Union of Soviet Writers. After Doctor Zhivago reached the West, it was soon translated into 18 languages.

On May 31, 1988, Pasternak's museum and grave were visited by Mrs. Reagan, a longtime admirer of the "Dr. Zhivago" novel. She said the noontime visit to the wooded Moscow suburb of Peredelkino ''impressed me greatly. It was very, very touching."
